Crossing the Nullarbor

Driving the Nullarbor
Driving the Nullarbor

Throwback to that time that I worked and travelled a year in Australia as a backpacker and drove the Nullarbor for the first time.

Back in the day, The Nullarbor for me was just a very long stretch of road between Perth and Adelaide with not much in between apart from a few roadhouses and some great wild camping spots.

Boy I was wrong when I came back years later and discovered these amazing places along the Nullabor.

Things to do along the Nullarbor

We all know that Australia is home to an amazing outback region with so many different things to see and do. There are beautifully formed landscapes, crystal clear waters and history at every turn.

Driving the Nullarbor is one of those Australia bucket list experiences and a popular drive for both natives and tourists.

The Nullarbor is known for  a lot of open space, but you will also see a lot of trees, plants and animals along the way.

However there are sights a bit off the Nullarbor that you will not see anywhere else in Australia so it is definitely worth the trip.

Make sure you take plenty of snacks, pay attention to your fuel gauge and where the next fuel station will be and make use of car games and you will not be disappointed with an adventure along the Nullarbor.

Crossing the entire Nullarbor without stopping off at attractions and taking your time can take as little as 2 – 3 days ( The first time I drove the Nullabor it only took 3! )

We recommend taking longer than this for your road trip from South Australia to Western Australia – or the other way around –  so that you can explore the beauty of it all.

There will be times when all you see is road and you will be wondering; “when it will end?” – but never fear, the results of the places you see will make up for all that concrete road!

Our favourite places along the Nullarbor

We wrote down the route in order from South Australia to Western Australia

Fowlers Bay

Fowlers Bay is a unique little township that has a bit of an odd look to it. The towering sand dunes encroaching on the buildings and empty streets give you a chance to get out of the car and have a walk around looking at all the history of the town.

You can go to the top of the dunes and have a full 360 degree look of the town and the surroundings. Although the town itself is no longer active, it is still a popular place to fish if you feel like a bit of fun whilst you are there.

Stop at Nullarbor Roadhouse

Nullarbor Roadhouse is a great stop to fuel up, grab a coffee and a snack.

Bunda Cliffs

If you need a bit of fresh area and a stop from driving, Bunda Cliffs will definitely wake you up. You can walk to the top of the cliffs and look over the water. The winds on the cliffs can get quite intense so make sure you are wearing a jacket to keep warm. Stay safe and keep an eye on those around you.

The views are amazing and make for some great photos opportunities to remind you of this beautiful area along the Nullarbor.

You can also camp around here. Find out more at the WikiCamps App.

Eyre Bird Observatory

If you are travelling the Nullarbor with a 4WD, a stop off at the Eyre Bird Observatory is a must. Whilst here you can spend the night at the old Telegraph station camping and you can spend the day bird watching and taking in the fresh air.

90 Mile Straight

This is exactly what is sounds like. A stretch of road that goes for 90 Miles straight (there is a slight bend at one point) I know, this doesn’t sound very exciting does it?

But it’s a unique driving experience as there are not much roads in the world that go for 90 Miles straight.

Also make sure you stop at the ’90 Mile Straight” sign. This is a good place to jump out of the car and have a photo opportunity with the sign.

Border Village

Near the border between South Australia and Western Australia is the Border Village which has a petrol station, motel, cabins and caravan sites. It’s open 24/7.

Here you can find the story of the Big Roo, or ‘Rooey II’, a giant kangaroo which is a perfect companion to all the other ‘Big’ pieces of Australia. The big Banana, Pineapple, Crab, Crocodile, you name it, and Australia has it in it’s big version.

Border Village, is also a Western Australian agricultural checking point (fruit, vegetables, plants, seeds, soil, honey, birds and animals must be declared)

From Border Village it’s around 1253 km to Adelaide, 946 km to Port Augusta and 1441 km to Perth. It is only 12 km from Eucla in Western Australia.

Don’t forget this is also where you switch over into Western Australian time – so if your car clock and phones do not auto update make sure you do it so you can keep track of time (literally)

Eucla National Park

Eucla National Park’s southern edge of the park borders a section of the Great Australian Bight. Other notable features of the park include Wilson Bluff and Delisser sandhills.

The area is composed of mallee scrub and heath vegetation, typical of the Southern Australia coast, as are wildflowers.

Norseman

Norseman is the gateway to the vast Nullarbor Plain and is the first Western Australian town for travelers taking the long journey from South Australia to Western Australia.

The Norseman area is very popular among four wheel drive enthusiasts keen to explore the Nullarbor Plain, untouched temperate woodlands, rugged granite outcrops, ancient salt lakes and the rest of the amazing South West Coast.

After Norseman you can explore the beauty of Australia’s stunning South West. Read all about it right HERE
