Broome: Pearl of the Kimberley, Western Australia

Sunset at Cable Beach Broome

They say that diamonds are a girl’s best friend but maybe you haven’t met pearls and there is no better place to get acquainted with these gems of the ocean than in Broome.

Situated in the north part of Western Australia in the beautiful Kimberly and surrounded by some of the most beautiful scenery in the country, this beach town is a perfect mix of rest and relaxation plus fun adventure and, of course, shining jewellery.

But while pearls are what Broome is famous for, surrounding the town is Cable Beach, Town Beach and Gantheaume Point, three very special spots that deserve your attention when exploring this remote yet fascinating part of the country.

When we lived in Kununurra for almost 4 years, Broome was our beach getaway. It was Sem’s first-holiday destination when he was 5 months old and it was our first family holiday destination and road trip. Broome was also the place where Sem put his toes for the first time on the beach and where he got introduced to the ocean  🙂

Although it is a 1100km drive from Kununurra, you won’t find a single traffic light along the way and it’s basically just straight forward.

We share with you our favourite outdoor things to do in Broome.

Cable Beach | 4×4 Driving & Soaking up the Sun

Red cliffs lead down to a 22 kilometre stretch of white sand and the turquoise water of the Indian Ocean. Sure, you could walk along this piece of paradise, or even cruising down it with a 4 wheel drive like we loved to do, but what makes Cable Beach one of the most unique in the country is the sunrise and sunset camel rides on offer. Personally not our cup of tea, so we always liked to drive over cable beach whenever we were in Broome.

During the day, Cable Beach is perfect for soaking up the sun ( when it’s not too hot – which it is for around 9 months of the year 😉 swimming, fishing and kayaking. Always check for crocodiles tho as you are in croc country.

If you’re there between October and February, there is also a chance of seeing and swimming with the turtles.

Cable Beach during sunset

The Cable Beach ( and Town Beach ) sunsets are a thing of beauty, the kind that postcards are made out of. The purple, gold and fiery red can be viewed and enjoyed over and over again and make for amazing photo opportunities.

Gantheaume Point |  Where Outback and Ocean come together

Gantheaume Point is situated six kilometres south-west of Broome and is another breathtaking stretch of red cliffs and white sand. It’s literally where outback and ocean meet.

Driving the red outback dirt road to reach Gantheaume Point is fun on itself, and once there you can walk around and take in the breathtaking views and colours.

Broome Pearls are a girl’s best friend

Back to the pearls. If you are interested in leaving with some new baubles, there are many ways to get your hands on them. Harvest season usually ends in September, so there are certain times of the year when you will be shopping for the freshest pearls around.

Yet, they are always on offer in a number of shops and workshops, where you can be involved in designing the jewellery you’re going to wear. Owning a pearl from Broome is having a little bit of history to call your own and a very beautiful way to remember such a relaxing and unique holiday.

Camping in Broome

Around Broome, you won’t find any proper wild camping spots, but there are several campings. Make sure you book in advance if you want a spot during school holidays, as campsites are loaded during these times.
